Are there any children in Hallownest? Not the flukes, or the Vessels, or the summons the Knight has, just regular kids. Who grew up hearing the stories of bygone kingdoms and wondered what it would be like growing up then. And, since people that aren't orphans exist, are there any *parents* in Hallownest? Who are still raising children near a crumbling civilization filled with plague?

i'm still very busy with my studies but i decided to do at least a couple of doodles for ya! traversing hallownest might be a pain for thk sometimes cause most of passages... wasn't exactly meant for their height. and for the second doodle... i think the idea is pretty clear here

Hiiiii !!!

I've started to notice a pattern in the hk community.

When people (not all but most) draw pk ,in bug or gijinka, they tend to hide his pretty wings or not draw them at all.

So I've decided to ask bloggers if they could show or describe the king's wings, just out of curiosity (and for my own amusement)

I've been wanting to draw gijinka the Pale King and the White Lady for a long time, so I might have gotten a little carried away, haha, it doesn't quite match your request for wings….

He Pale King was described in the game as a recluse who was rarely seen outside the palace. I think he hid his wings under his cloak so as not to attract too much attention. Perhaps initially he wanted to have a more mundane connection with his subjects, but they still elevated him to the rank of god and prayed to his idols, so he just tried to look less like such an idol in everyday life

And as for his gijinka, he just wears the most closed clothes so that his divine nature does not confuse ordinary people (since the gijinka of other beetles are completely ordinary in my mind) The head is covered with a cloth, and the body is covered with a spacious medieval cotto. Only the face is visible, so mysterious~

The White Lady, on the contrary, does not hide her divine nature, I love this design of hers so much….. She is big and imposing, with exposed body parts, because her nature is higher than that of simple beetles (and it's probably not obvious in the picture, but she is very well-fed, after all, as the goddess of reproduction, she must be strong and fertile, huh)

Just asking for fun cuz I think you being really interesting points abt so many of the bats to the table: who do you think should be Batman if 1) Bruce Died, 2) Bruce voluntarily steps down (old age / debilitating injury) or any other scenarios you would like to explore.

It's an age old question, it's fun to see who thinks what and what thoughts they bring to the table :)

Such a great question!! Though honestly I'm not sure I have any original or good thoughts haha. For me the Batman successor should be one of two people: Cassandra Cain (I am a Cass blog) or Dick Grayson.

For Cass the reason is obvious. So many people have written about how Batman is the culmination of her arc about agency and controlling her destiny - for a girl who was raised to be nothing, to be a tool for other people, becoming the centre of the narrative is an incredibly poignant and wonderful conclusion. She wants to be Batman, she has the ability to be Batman, she believes in Batman; she is as clear a successor as you could get.

Dick is more debatable. His feelings on being Batman have always been tangled up in his frustrations with Bruce, in a way Cass (who is more able, albeit imperfectly, to separate the man from the symbol) doesn't deal with. So I think there's some panels of him saying he doesn't want to be Batman, doesn't like doing it, etc.

However, in my mind he does like being Batman, he just doesn't like being Bruce's version of Batman. He comes to this conclusion in Gates of Gotham, and the back parts of Batman and Robin (2009) is basically him having fun once Bruce is alive. It was Bruce's death that made things difficult, not the mantle itself. Where Cass can be Batman now, Dick can elevate the mantle; and it's no secret that Bruce himself views Dick as his clear successor.

I honestly think both should wield the mantle. I love the idea of Cass being Gotham's Batman while Dick is the Justice League/wider world's Batman. This plays to their strengths, and solidifies their arcs: Cass finds a permanent home and a place she loves that loves her back, and Dick gets to travel again, using his leadership and interpersonal skills to save people.

In the case of Bruce's retirement, this would be the perfect set-up. For his death, though, I think it would be complicated by both Dick and Cass' grief. Look at the Batman Reborn era: the Dick and Cass parallels were actually insane. They were both told not to wield the Bat mantle - Dick by Bruce's message, and Cass by Bruce asking her to give Batgirl to Steph. This hurt them immensely, but they tried to follow Bruce's orders. The only difference was that Tim (and Jason) forced Dick's hand into disobeying Bruce, while Cass was already gone.

In an ideal world, Tim should've been asking them both to take up the mantle. His meeting with Cass in HK should've kickstarted her journey home, and she would've arrived back for angsty talks with Dick about who the Bat symbol belongs to or something. This basically happens in Gates of Gotham: Cass' conversation with Dick in the car is about not letting Gotham (and, I would argue, Bruce) dictate who they can or cannot be. They both want the mantle, and this was an acknowledgment that they both deserved it, too.

So, long story short, Cass and Dick are my picks for Batman successor. Them simultaneously being Batman would be so fun too, given their complicated relationship. They would be keeping score of who's the better Bat, and Cass would probably lob Dick out a window again, but they'd also have a shared understanding and deep compassion for each other's circumstances and desires. Curious to hear other people's thoughts!

(Also Duke Thomas should be their Robin but that's a post for another day).

Infection timeline/time freeze theory

So this is the timeline as far as I could figure out, starting from the sealing of the infection within the hollow knight. But first important note~

The void has a unique power to freeze time. Or in other words time does not pass within the void, this is hinted at in different parts of the game, but would also really explain how vessels such as Ghost who spent most of their life trapped within the abyss do not age, while on the outside the hollow knight does.

So the timeline~

The sealing happens.

Hollow knight becomes infected after sleeping. Which must take some time, (enough for the statue to be dedicated for example. Just long enough for people to think they're finally safe.) but not too long, I imagine a few months to a year.

(Anyway it is easy for Hollow not to sleep because of both A- being a higher being and void entity with not as much need to, and B- the void within the black egg keeps time frozen there.) Still I can't imagine that the infection was sealed away for very long, And when it finally came back, it came back full force.

Knowing that their one hope has failed them, the king becomes desperate, He has the city gates sealed in attempt to save as many bugs as possible. (Failed attempt of course.)

He and the whole basin are slowly becoming swallowed by his regrets. (The void) During his final hours, as the fact that he doomed his child and all the dreamers, and all of it for nothing would certainly be tearing him apart.

Now the time freeze Hallownest is under, either began because the whole kingdom was so filled with regret/it's ruler especially, and the void was able to get control from that, or because the king purposely created a spell, utilizing void, to freeze time as a last ditch effort to stop the spread of the infection. Either way the void played a role here. And the Kingdom was put into a hundred year (multiple hundred year?) stasis.

And the infection still spread, though at this point most would have been driven away or had already died anyway.

Skip ahead to Ghosts arrival in Hallownest!

The zombification of the infected bugs did not happen until shortly before Ghosts arrival. The hollow knight, though very powerful and resilient, has still been slowly dying, being infected this entire time and is finally at the point of near death.

That's when Ghost is called. (And Quirrel! By Monomon.)

Radiance has more power now, and uses her power to bring to life the bodies of the infected, to aid in her escape.

When we meet Quirrel, who had arrived not long before us, he says~

"For so long I've felt drawn here. So many tales full of wonders and horrors. No longer could I resist. I just had to see it for myself. And what a time I chose to arrive! This dead world has sprung to life. The creatures are riled up and the earth rumbles. The air is thick. I wonder what could have brought it all about?"

Which implies that the dead have only recently been awoken, the Radiance only recently having gained more power. (With the hollow knight weakening.)

Anyway then the events of the game play out!

That is the timeline of the infection as far as I could figure it out! At Least my theory!
